The Rise of Twitter - Part 1
One of the fastest-growing web applications out there today is Twitter. Despite the number of downtimes and crashes it has suffered since it began, Twitter is fast becoming one of the most popular and useful communication tools on the web.
Twitter (or “twittering” as it is sometimes referred to) is super easy to use which can help explain why so many people use it. Want to let your friends (and anyone else who follows your Twitter updates) know about your new comic or project right this minute? Post it via Twitter. Want people to check out a new update to your blog? Post it and a link to it via Twitter.
After creating a free account at the Twitter web site, you can begin to send out updates (or “twitters”) but it is always best to start using Twitter AFTER you have added some of your friends to your Twitter account which you can do by downloading and installing any one of the growing-number of Twitter applications available online, some of which are found on the Twitter site (http://twitter.com/downloads).
Here is a handy guide to some Twitter desktop applications you should check out if you use Twitter or if you wish to learn more about the possibilities of using Twitter from either a personal or business standpoint. I’ll have a handy guide to some online Twitter applications and sites you should check out later this week. Enjoy.
Desktop Applications
Twhirl: Possibly the most widely-used Twitter desktop application. Sign-in using your Twitter account information and start receiving and posting updates. Offers you the opportunity to receive and send updates for multiple Twitter accounts. Windows and Mac versions available, and it is free to use.
Snitter: Another in the growing number of Twitter desktop apps which allow you to send and receive updates. Not as robust as Twhirl (it’s in beta) but still worth checking out. Windows and Mac versions available, and it is free to use.
Twitterrific: This is a Mac-only Twitter application which I haven’t had the opportunity to use since I don’t have a Mac. The specs for it are the same for the other applications listed here except you have to pay a one-time fee of $14.95 for it. Not the wisest move considering the availability of free applications which provides the same functionality.
Tweetr: What sets this application apart from the others is not only the ability to send files (up to 10MB) to your friends using Tweetr but you can also use your web cam to display your image on your Tweetr application via a small window. Haven’t had the opportunity to test it nor have I heard too much about it on the blogosphere. Windows and Mac versions available, and it is free to use.
Twitteroo: Comparable to Twhirl in the extensive number of features, Twitteroo does offer a couple of features not offered by the others that I am aware of such as the ability to view your Friends timeline or the Public timeline and some customization options. Windows and Mac versions available, and it is free to use.
